작품 해설
도종환 시인의 <슬픔의 뿌리> 시집의 시들을 선택하여 가곡으로 쓰는 도중에 알게 된 시 “희망의 바깥은 없다”에서 받은 영감을 바탕으로 쓴 곡이다. 흔히 목 놓아 우는 것은 치유의 한 과정이라고 한다. 죽은 이를 두고 함께 슬퍼하는 장례식이란 무릇 집단적인 치유의 문화적 현상이라고 할 수 있을 것이다.
진정으로 사랑하는 이를 잃었을 때, 처절한 슬픔의 끝에 겨우 눈곱만큼의 삶의 희망을 얻게 된다. 이 회한과 비통, 그 보편적인 정서를 이 곡의 선율에 담았다.

Program Note
This piece is inspired by a poem that is found in Jonghwan Do’s collection of poems The Root of sorrow with which I was writing a song cycle. Generally, grieving is a way of self-healing processes. The funeral is a social phenomenon where a group of people mentally cure themselves up together.
When a man loses a beloved one, only a deep sorrow leads to an ounce of desire for living. In this piece, I wanted to compose the melody of the universal lamentation in my own way as a form of instrumental music.
