작품 해설
Dryad for Solo Marimba 는 숲에서 느끼는 신비로운 체험에 대한 음악적인 해석이다. 홀로 숲을 걸었을 때, 진정으로 자연과 일대 일로 마주하였을 때, 우리는 자연적인 몽환 상태에 빠지게 된다. 마치 무엇에 홀린 듯한 기분과도 같은 이 느낌은 나에게는 즉각적이면서 감각적이고, 또한 연속적이다. 숲에서 느끼는 시간의 흐름은 일상적인 시간의 흐름과 다른, 어떤 왜곡된 시간이다. 같은 맥락에서 신선노름에 도끼자루 썩는다는 옛 이야기가 더욱 설득력을 갖는지도 모르겠다. 이 곡의 흐름을 주도하는 끊이지 않고 반복되는 패턴들의 반복과 그 맥(pulse)의 변화들, 그리고 복합구조적인(superimposed) 화성에서 일어나는 음향의 색체들은 나의 이러한 숲 속 거닐기(bushwalk)의 경험을 반영하고 있다.
숲 속에서 느끼는 이 신비로운 체험은 그리스 신화에 등장하는 나무의 정령, Dryad와의 교감을 의미하는 것인지도 모른다. 우리는 숲 속에서 모르는 새에 그들의 끊임없는 속삭임에 노출되는 것인지도 모르겠다.

Program Note
Dryad for Solo Marimba is the interpretation of my experience while bushwalking. When walking alone in the forest, we often have a dreamlike feeling. From my experience, this strange feeling, which never occurs in my urban life, was somewhat instantaneous, sensuous and continuous. We lose track of time easily in the forest because the sense of time is so different. In this piece, the continuous change of rhythmic patterns, pulses and harmonic colors depicts my bushwalking experience.
This strange feeling may come from the interaction with Dryad, the tree nymph in Greek mythology. Without realizing, we might be exposed to their endless whispering in the forest.
