작품 해설
지난 2017년 3월에는 한국의 이세돌 프로 바둑 기사와 겨룬 알파고(AlphaGo)가 큰 화제가 되었다. 컴퓨터 인공지능이 인간과 채스로 겨룰 수 있는지 오랫동안 연구해 왔다는 것은 알고 있었지만, 바둑과 같이 더욱 복잡다단한 게임까지도 인간의 한계를 넘어서는 컴퓨터 인공지능의 모습에 ‘진짜 4차 산업혁명이 목전에 왔구나’라는 충격이 몰려왔다. 과연 인공지능과 융복합 과학기술이 지배적일 미래의 모습은 무엇일까? 많은 사람들이 희망과 우려를 동시에 나타내고 있지만, 나는 이 웃기는 상황을 상상해 보았다. 코미디를 쓰는 인공지능이 바로 그것이다. 인공지능이 무엇인가 되고 싶어하는 갈망을 갖는다는 것도 재미있지만, 컴퓨터가 쓴 코미디는 과연 어떤 형태일까를 생각하는 것도 미소를 짓게 한다. 인간이 보여주는 스탠업 코미디와는 다를 것이다. 인공지능 사이에서만 통하는 유머 감각일 수도 있다.
“코미디 작가가 되고픈 A. I.”는 이러한 상상을 영감으로 작곡되었다. 인간의 유머감각이라는 정복하기 힘든 영역을 위해 될 때까지 지치지 않고 노력하는 A. I., 그 모습에서 나타나는 코믹한 모습을 반복과 변형, 색채감 등으로 서사적으로 표현하였다. 코미디의 중요 소재인 상투성과 의외성을 음악적으로 드러내고 있다. 나는 아직 오지 않은 미래에 대해 심각하게 고민하고 싶지 않다. 단지 어떤 미래이던지 겸허하게 받아들일 뿐.

Program Note
Last March 2017, it was witnessed that AlphaGo that beat Sae-dol Lee, a professional Baduk(Go) player. Although the research for A. I. (artificial intelligent) rivaling the human being for Chess has been continued for decades, it was shocking to witness that A. I. conquered the human being for Baduk which has been regarded as a more complex game for computers to overcome. People felt that the fourth industrial revolution is just around the corner. What will be the world after the fourth industrial revolution? There have been many hopes and worries regarding to this matter, but I just imagined an only comical situation wherein A. I. thriving to write a comedy sketch in the future. It is funny to think that the computer aspire to be something. Furthermore, it makes me smile when I imagine the comedy sketch which A. I. write. It will certainly not stand-up comedy material. It could be only inside-joke among the A. I.
This imagination inspired this piece, “A. I. Wanting to be a Comedy Writer”. The Piece musically describes the comical situation, in which A. I. keeps trying to decipher the humor that seems impossible for logic to understand, by repetitions, motivic manipulations and changing colors. Also, the banality and unexpectedness, which I think are the core material in comedy, are expressed musically. Actually, I do not want to worry about the future that does not present yet. I will just embrace any form of future with my humble mind.
